On January 31, 2012, following a long battle with depression, American pop singer Leslie Barbara Carter died the home of her father in Mayville, New York. Authorities suspected a drugs overdose to be the cause of the death.
Leslie Carter was the sister of Nick Cater, member of The Backstreet Boys (BSB), and Aaron Carter, a professional singer, Angel Charisma Carter, a model and Bobbie Jean Carter. She was living in Toronto (Canada) since her marriage to musician drummer Mike Ashton in 2008. Leslie Carter was the mother of a baby girl born in 2011, Allysa Jane. Leslie Carter, who played piano and clarinet, started her singing career in the 1990s.
She followed the footstep of her brother Nick, who at the time started performing with the BSB band. At only 13 years old, Leslie signed a record deal with the American label Dreamworks Records (1999-2005). Her single “Like Wow” was in the soundtrack of Shrek and reached number 99 on the Billboard charts. Despite her early success, her album was never released. In 2001, Leslie Carter made an appearance in the TV special Samantha Mumba and Aaron Carter in Concert. In 2006, Leslie Carter, with her four siblings, actively took part in the 8 episodes of the reality show House of Carters. Following years of living apart, the siblings reunite in the same house, trying to deal with their family problems. House of Carters air on the E! Cable network and Much Music. Leslie also performed in the band The Other Half. The band members included Mike Ashton (drums), Jason Eldon (electric guitar) and Sean Smit (bass guitar and back-up vocals). The Other Half split in 2009.
For the past couple years, it’s been reported that she tried to distance herself from the show business. She was living with her family in Toronto. Shortly before her death, she had moves from Toronto to New York to better deal with prescription drug issues.
On February 2, 2012, while performing at the New York's Irving Plaza, Nick Carter dedicated the song "Falling Down" to his sister.
