From hockey player to pop singer: portrait of Jonathan Roy, son of Patrick Roy NHL star
71Jonathan Roy is born in Montreal (Quebec) on March 15, 1989. Jonathan Roy is the son of Patrick Roy. Patrick Roy is a retired ice hockey goaltender of the National Hockey League (NHL). Patrick Roy had been a goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. During his professional hockey career, Patrick Roy had won two Stanley Cup championships. In 2004, Patrick Roy had been selected as the greatest goaltender in the NHL history.
For many years, it had appeared for fan that his son, Jonathan Roy, was going to follow his footsteps. But it hasn’t been exactly the case. He’s the story.

Jonathan Roy had played for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League between 2005 and 2009. In 2005, he had plays for the Victoriaville team, who first recruited him in August 1, 2005. On December 18, 2006, Jonathan Roy had been exchanged to Québec team. From 2006 to 2009, he had played for the Québec team, the Remparts under the number 30. Jonathan Roy father, Patrick Roy, co-owns and is the head coach the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Patrick Roy had coached Jonathan Roy from 2006 to 2008. From that extraordinary father and son reunion, we could have expected the best. As a goaltender, Jonathan Roy had the chance of a lifetime: to be coach professionally by his father Patrick Roy, former NHL star. Many young hockey players would have liked to be in his place. But it’s seem like Jonathan Roy might had been too arrogant to appreciate his chance and never become what he could had become: a fantastic goaler, just like his father Patrick Roy. Here’s what happen.
On March 23, 2008, a miserable act had changed everything. During the game of March 23, 2008, the Quebec Remparts were losing 7-1 late in the second period against Chicoutimi Sagueneens when a fight broke out in the Remparts’ end. Until here, nothing dramatic, just a fight between hockey players, unfortunately too common, part why I never watch hockey games, I just hate hockey as part. You won’t ever see professional football players like David Beckham fighting one again each other. Hockey is just such a ridiculous sport.
Anyway, Jonathan Roy had been involved in the hockey fight during the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff game. Jonathan Roy had punched the Sagueneens goaltender Bobby Nadeau several times on the face. Jonathan Roy keeps punching and punching again Bobby Nadeau, while Nadeau was desperately trying to protect himself from Jonathan Roy. Nadeau didn't defend himself and didn’t respond to Jonathan Roy violent crime. But this was not enough for Jonathan Roy, after being separate from Bobby Nadeau, Jonathan Roy gave the middle-finger salute to the crowd at the Centre Georges-Vezina in Chicoutimi and got involved in a second fight, this time with Chicoutimi defenseman Sebastien Rioux. Jonathan Roy was given two fighting majors, a minor and two game misconducts. Nadeau wasn’t penalized. The Chicoutimi Sagueneens finally win 10-1.
The night of March 23, 2008 had marked the end of Jonathan Roy career as a goaltender in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
On April 28, 2009, Jonathan Roy release his first debut album, an English album call What I’ve Become. Jonathan Roy had written the 13 songs. The songs had been arranged and produced by Richard Samson who worked with The Lost Fingers.
Following the release of Jonathan album, on May 2009, Patrick Roy had announced that he had given up on a coaching opportunity for the Colorado Avalanche team of the NHL. Patrick Roy decides to continue to coach the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Wow! Isn’t strange? An ex NHL star decide to turn down a real coaching opportunity in the NHL and decide, instead, to concentrate in the junior league… Something is wrong here, don’t you think so?
It’s been said that Patrick Roy had giving up a high position as coach of Colorado team to assist his son Jonathan Roy to start his music career. Hockey might be in Roy family, but not the music. Jonathan Roy first album is terribly superficial and extremely boring. After hearing 2 songs, we couldn’t hear the rest, enough of that crap. But from crap couldn’t come better music than this one. Listen to get an idea for yourself. We are really far away from the genius of Peter Broderick, only two years older than Jonathan Roy. But age is anything, talent is. Jonathan Roy does not have any musical talent. He doesn’t play any instrument and I guess his father Patrick Roy might have spent a fortune in signing lessons for Jonathan Roy.
Yes, the guy cans sing, and something well, but his songs have no soul, no personality and no favor. I no there’s no relation, but this album remember us of This remember us of Jacques Villeneuve, Canadian automobile racing driver. Jacques Villeneuve is the son of Gilles Villeneuve, Formula One driver champion. Jacques Villeneuve had won the 1997 Formula One World Championship. On February 19, 2007, Jacques Villeneuve had released his debut album, Private Paradise. Of course, there’s no relation between Jonathan Roy and Jacques Villeuve, but both meet common music roads, once pop, and the other, French-indie-pop.
