Movie review of the romantic comedy Dewitt & Maria

Imagine discovering that the man or woman of your dream is actually living in the same building as yourself. You cross the person everyday on your way to the mail and the laundry room. Well, this is how the love story of Dewitt, played by Jeremie Loncka, and Maria, played by Dylan Diehl began.

Love at first sight, but Dewitt strange behavior scared Maria. Things quickly got complicated when Dewitt, a misunderstood computer genius, lost contact with reality. Dewitt concentrated his efforts at elaborating a “romance software”, specifically design to make the person of your dream fall into you. Despite having the girl of his dream living right next door, Dewitt focus on the elaboration of his software. Maria worked as an assistant in a doctor office in her first real job and has no prospect of a boyfriend, preferring to concentrate her efforts in her new career. Lee Benton stars as Jean Fullbean, Dewitt single mother who, with the help of the father of Maria, Tony Vornelini, played by David Novak, will set up Dewitt and Maria first date.

Strong from her soap opera background – the actress played in The Bold and the Beautiful – Lee Benton brings a sense of drama to Dewitt & Maria key scenes. In his role of Tony Vornelini, father of Maria, David Novak played a key character. David Novak has a nice screen presence. The actor credits include, among other, the TV series General Hospital, Melrose Place and Days of our Lives.

Red hair beauty Danielle De Luca played the role of Toni Vornellini, Maria sister. Danielle De Luca won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in the noir film, Diamond Confidential, at the American International Film Festival in 2010. Maria youngest sister, Monica is played by Olivia Dawn York. Monica teases Toni about her sexual orientation. Toni happens to be a lesbian.

Directed by Dennis Devine, the independent movie Dewitt & Maria is the adaptation of a play written by James Robert Mueller in 1987. In 1989, Dewitt & Maria won a New York State Council on the Arts grant. The prize supports the theater production. Dewitt & Maria took place in September 1989. For its 2010 version, the author incorporates new modern elements that did not exist in the 1980s: Internet, dating site, chat. And lesbianism, which we believe may haven’t been much common three decades ago. James Robert Mueller had been able to successfully actualize his writing to the reality of today. His son, Kurt Mueller, directed the photography of the set.

Tony Green signed the beautiful soundtrack of Dewitt & Maria. Dewitt & Maria song entrance remember the accordion of the 2001 French romantic comedy Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain) directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Dewitt & Maria is entertaining and of a nice family quality viewing. Dewitt & Maria: a love story with a happy ending. Just the way it uses to be.
